Wheat

Wheat has been a major component of our business for many years. We go to great lengths to provide a clean quality product, and the service to go along with it. We can treat your seed with fungicides, insecticides, and other nutrient products. We currently are producing products from KWA, AgriPro, Limagrain Cereals and Oklahoma Genetics.

AgriPro Wheat

AgriPro Wheat Guide – Take a look at the complete line of varieties from AgriPro here.

Bob Dole is very consistently a top performer. It has very good tolerance to rust as well as SBMV. It has moderate tolerance. It is out of the breeding program at KWA and was liscensed to AgriPro/Syngenta.

SY Benefit is a medium maturity variety with good Fusarium Head Blight tolerance. It has been a very consistent performer through the I-35 corridor. It has good milling and baking quality.

SY Grit is a medium early maturity variety with a good disease package. It has very good straw strength and a good disease package. It has been a very good performer in central and western Kansas.

SY Monument has developed into one of the top varieties for a good part of the region. It has a good disease package, and good drought tolerance as well as excellent top-end yield potential.

SY Rugged is a medium early variety that has good drought tolerance.  This has been a very good performer and has good leaf and stripe rust tolerance.

AP18 AX is a medium maturity variety that has shown good yield potential in the CoAXium production system. It has a good plant health package, and very good test weight.  It may be susceptible to some low pH issues, so be aware of that for your fields.

SY Wolverine is a medium early variety that has improved straw strength and very good yield potential in both irrigated and dryland areas.  Stripe rust showed to be a concern for this variety in 2020 though it had a good rating.  This variety should find a home on many acres through the plains.

Kansas Wheat Alliance (KWA)

Kansas Wheat Alliance is the outlet for genetics coming from the Kansas State University breeding program.  They have a good development program and work to get varieties suited for our environmental conditions.

Larry is a medium maturity variety that has had very good success in some areas. It has good stripe and stem rust tolerance, but is a good candidate for a fungicide application as well.

Zenda is a medium-early variety with good plant health. It was released as a replacement for Everest, but doesn’t quite have the same FHB resistance as Everest did.  It has a very good yield history but is moderately susceptible to drought.

Oklahoma Genetics, Inc. (OGI)

Oklahoma Genetics Inc.  has been very active in releasing new varieties recently that perform well as grain only and grazing/grain systems.

Lonerider has been a strong performer for the central plains. It is an ideal blend of genetics from duster, Billings and Eastern Europe germplasm.  It is a good fir for the Western plains.  Standability and short stature good for maximizing irrigated yields.

Gallagher is an early maturing variety with good grazing tolerance. It is resistant to leaf rust and stripe rust, soilborne mosaic virus and spindle streak mosaic virus.

Showdown has very good potential in a grain only system, as well being very adapted to a dual-purpose system. It has exhibited a good disease package with the exception of leaf rust when present before heading at the levels experienced in 2017.

Smith’s Gold is the first Gallagher progeny, but has better leaf health, a later pull-off date for grazing, and improved baking quality.  It is resistant to Hessian fly, greenbug and has improved resistance to stripe trust over Gallagher.

Doublestop CL Plus is a two gene Clearfield variety that has performed very well in plots and production fields as well as for customers.  It has an excellent yield potential, is an excellent grazing wheat, and is very drought tolerant.

Limagrain Cereal Seeds

Limagrain Cereal Seeds acquired the Trio breeding program a couple years ago.  They are located at Fort Collins, CO, and they have continued to utilize the facility at Valley Center, KS.  They have been able to bring in new sources of genetics and have rapidly developed many exceptional varieties.

T158 has been a very solid producer for us with very good yield potential.  It isn’t as well suited for low pH soil as other varieties though.

LCS Mint is a newer variety that has had a very good yield history in the region.  It is a medium maturity variety, but is photoperiod sensitive, so maturity has varied from year to year.

LCS Wizard is a newer variety that has yielded very well.  It has exceptional straw strength and acid soil tolerance. It has a delayed hollow stem that allows it to be grazed longer without adversely affecting grain yield much.

LCS Pistol is an offspring of T158 and has excellent drought tolerance and yield potential.  It has good tolerance to acid soil, and a very good disease package so far.

LCS Chrome is a new release that has very good yield potential. It has excellent straw and is resistant to leaf rust and stripe rust. It is a medium maturity variety.

T-173 is a Soft Red Winter awnless wheat variety that is an excellent choice for forage production.

Public Varieties & Wheat Blends

Endurance is the only variety that we still have that would be considered a public variety. It was produced through Oklahoma State University’s ‘Grazing & Grain’ program. It has had a very good stable history of production. It has a delayed hollow stem that allows it to be grazed longer without adversely affecting the grain yield substantially. This may be the last year that it will be available from many seed retailers at a certified level, as they are no longer going to produce Foundation class seed. A newer variety that looks to be a very good potential replacement with the delayed hollow stem characteristics would be Bentley from OGI.

We have requests for blending varieties from time to time, and that service is available for a small extra charge, or we can layer the varieties in your truck, for no additional charge. In general blends have shown yield advantages many times over the separate varieties that are in the mixes, but they can make harvest and other management practices more difficult if there are differences in maturity. It is that difference in maturity of varieties though that can be the biggest benefit of a blend in the ability to handle stresses at different times of the year.
