Forage Cereals

LCS Saturn Barley

• Excellent straw strength
• Good option for use in cover crop mixes
• Very good stripe and leaf rust tolerance
• Higher than average protein content

Tech Sheet

Lavina Barley

• Lavina Spring Barley was developed by Montana State University as a forage barley line.
• It has shown to be widely adapted to Kansas and south for early spring plantings of forage and cover crop blends.
• It has great forage yield potential and reaches harvest faster than spring oats used for a forage crop in the region.
• Lavina is an excellent product for haying and good for silage.
• This variety should not be planted in the fall unless it is used in a cover crop blend intended for freezing out for standing residue over the winter.

Tech Sheet

Rushmore Oats

• 2019 Release from South Dakota State University.
• Rushmore is a newer line that is an earlier maturity that allows for it to be used for a grain or forage crop option in Kansas.
• It has had an excellent trial history for product on in both grain and forage production over multiple cropping seasons.
• It also has a record of producing good quality forage along with overall tonnage.

Tech Sheet

Goliath Oats

• 2012 Release from South Dakota State University.
• Goliath is known for high yields in both grain and forage production.
• The standability of Goliath can be lessened in situations with higher fertility and should probably be harvested for forage in those cases to prevent lodging issues.
• Goliath has become one of the most widely planted oat varieties across Kansas and other neighboring areas because of its tremendous forage potential.
• It is a late maturing variety, so early heat could cause issues some years in forage or grain yield capabilities.

Tech Sheet

Cereal Rye

• Versatile small grain used for cover cropping, grazing, hay, or silage

• Effective weed suppression when managed properly
• Can be grazed in winter and tillers in milder climates
• Elbon is the most popular variety in the Central and Southern Plains

Tech Sheet

‘Ray’ Forage Winter Wheat

• Hard red winter wheat released in 2018, developed for forage use
• Tall, awnless, late-maturing variety—intended as a Willow Creek alternative
• Similar forage yield and quality to Willow Creek, with higher seed yield
• Resistant to stripe rust; susceptible to stem rust; low PPO levels
• Average milling/baking traits; average to above-average grain yield

Tech Sheet

Surge™ Triticale

• • Dual planting window, spring/fall
• • Awnless (beardless)
• Late maturity
• • High silage yield and good silage quality
• • Widely adapted throughout the US, spring planted across the northern US or fall planted in CA, AZ and the southern US

Tech Sheet

P919 Winter Barley

• P919 Winter Barley is an awnletted variety that works very well for grazing and haying systems in the Central and Southern Plains.
• It has very fast emergence in the fall with good growth for grazing potential.
• It has also been an excellent component to fall cover crop mixes.
• P919 has the ability to be an excellent grain producing variety that can be utillized for excellent livestock feed.
